 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
No Mojo, I haven't dropped the Losi.....yet! But the fit/finish of the RT5 is pretty nice.
I had good intentions with this paint job, but my crappy air brush had other ideas... I went to shadow in the drips and it was spitting chunks of black acrylic... [hence, black body!] In the future I'll take Beau's advice and use lacquer based paints... and a gravity fed brush for details! Dear Santa....

 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
Jim - usually "spatter" is caused by the paint being too thick. This is how I dilute; Laquer = 1:3 or 1:1, depends on colors and what ur using it for.. silver backing or black for highlights 2:1. Water-based 1teaspoon to a new bottle, if I needed it more dilute, then i would play with dif dilutions in a lil glass bottle. Acyrilic Enamel (used for models).. testors has a blend thats made for airbrushing and you have to do nothing to it! Any of the other types, i would dilute similar to laquer.
Spattering can also be caused by not enought air pressure or paint buildup on the tip of the needle. If your doing highlight work, keep an eye on the tip of the needle if it has buildup, remove it with a q-tip dipped in thinner.
If you see "cob-webbing", then your paint is to thick and the air pressure is to high..
ive messed up a many of bodies learning these things.. hahaha.

 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
Beau, i meant to ask you the other day if you still had an origional rc10 body and wing laying around? I have this gold tub car but no body. I want to give it a try at jhon's but not sure how the 6 gear tranny will hold up. Let me know what you find in your closet full of bodies, look under the 1987 file.

 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
well this is my first attempt at painting an rc body. yes i know i sprayed on the grey a bit to much (must try not to do that again), to my defence i couldnt see it on the body! next time i am thinking it should be darker grey. i did show the grey to hubby and asked him if that was ok and he did say yes. hubby came up with the idea of how it should be painted since it is his body. in the picture you really cant see the orange >< seems you can only see the yellow, but when i look at it i can see the orange plain as day when its right in front of me lol. i think i am mostly disapointed on what the hood looks like, i feel bad for that part. finally got my body in so i get to start painting mine and i think mine isnt going to be as hard to cut out and paint. his body had lots of tight areas to attempt to get that exacto knife and airbrush in. mine doesnt seem to have as many of those areas lol.

 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
the trick to carbon fiber it to "tint" the area with black first, then lay the self paper and spray to light coats of silver then remove the self paper and back with black....

 Re: Painting RC Bodies Question
Ok, here is my 2nd attempt at painting a RC body. This one is my sc10. I ended up messing up a few times (go figure) but nothing major. This body was by far easier to get the exacto knife and airbrush in the corners vs hubby's. You cant tell in the picture but the dark green is a color change paint; it changes from green to blue to gold. Although I have yet to see the gold; I only see the green/blue color change. The color change paint kept clogging my airbrush and the mirror chrome was just a pain in the butt for me. But all in all I think it turned out ok.
